Artist in Residence

Residencies can vary in length, ranging from a few days to several weeks.  In addition to performances, Storyteller Tim Lowry teaches thematic units covering educational standards in social studies, language arts, and performing arts.
Civil War Soldier's Camp
Visit with the soldiers as they lighten the mood of their grim reality with stories around the camp fire.  Look into a typical soldier's haversack and learn how it was used. 

Clara Barton, Founder of the American Red Cross
This residency tells the story of Clara Barton's efforts as a nurse during the Civil War.  Major battles of the War Between the States are chronicled through the eyes of soldiers as young as 12 years old.  This residency also becomes a service learning event partnering with the American Red Cross and has a strong writing component.

Francis Marion and the American Revolution
Targeting 3rd grade history, this residency highlights the bravery and dedication of the famous Revolutionary War hero known as the Swamp Fox.

Great American West
Learn about several cowboys names Bill: Wild Bill Hickock, Bill Picket, the Dusky Demon, and the great tall tale character, Pecos Bill.

How to Become a Storyteller/Storywriter
Great for all ages!  Learn how to break a story down into beginning, middle, and end and tell a great tale.

Immigration (based on the book Bridge to America by Linda Glaser)
This residency tells the gripping story of Fivel, an immigrant boy from Poland, and the events that brought his family to America.  It contains daily mini-lessons about the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

International Folk Tales
Tim tells a great variety of stories from around the world.  Contact him to tailor the residency to suit your curriculum.

Storytelling for the Beginning Reader
This residency helps young readers tell a story using visual aids.

A Walk Through South Carolina History
Follow the history of SC through early colonial days, slave life, the Ante Bellum period, the early 20th century, ending with an election of government officials and passage of a bill declaring the new official SC folk tale.

World War II Radio Hour
History comes alive as Tim tells the war front story of a WWII soldier.  Students get in on the action by producing a radio show complete with commercials.   Expressive reading is emphasized as students read character parts.  Sound effects are created using found objects.
