Rainy Day Activity
We've had several spring thunder showers lately.  The rain made me think of an activity my mom used to help me with when I was a little boy-- measuring rain drops.  You might like to try it.
Here's what to do:
You will need a shallow pie tin or cake pan, a flour sifter, and a little flour.  Sift just enough flour into the pan to cover the bottom.  Take the pan to the window or door and hold it out into the rain so that a few rain drops strike the bottom.  Bring the pan inside and place it in a hot oven for three or four minutes.  When you take the pan out, in the bottom you will see little balls or pellets of hard dough.  Each ball or pellet will be just about the size of the raindrop that made it.  Be sure not to hold the pan out in the rain too long, or the drops will run together and you won't have an accurate measure.  Use a ruler to measure the diameter of each rain drop.  Use the information you gather to solve the following math problems:  Can you calculate the average size of the rain drops?  What is the difference between the largest and smallest rain drop?  If all the raindrops were combined into one, how large would this water drop be?

A Thunder Storm Story
Speaking of rainy day activities, the Story of the Month is thunder storm story, a Maidu folktale from northern California.  It is a porquot tale that explains why Thunder lives above the clouds and never comes down to the ground.  You can download the story at this link
